1Overview

Verification notes. Specifications below are transcribed from the Model 945 SAM III source datasheet. The datasheet lists Lanthanum (1.5 x 1.5) and Cerium (1.5 x 1.5) configurations; for any crystal size not stated verbatim, confirm against the latest released Berkeley Nucleonics datasheet before quoting (verify). The source datasheet does not state IEC or ITRAP certification status; verify with engineering. The smartphone is supplied as an unlocked Android handset (the source notes an LG E960 Nexus 4 or similar); confirm the current shipped handset (verify).

The Model 945 SAM III is the latest Radioisotope Identification Device (RIID) from Berkeley Nucleonics. It offers the convenience and familiarity of smartphone / PDA technology with powerful identification and analysis algorithms. The handheld Model 945 gives users real-time updates on isotope ID, isotope class, dose rates, and count rates. The useful library options allow users an application-specific experience: Medical, ANSI, SNM, NORM, User-Customized, and more. The library is expandable to 497 isotopes.

The current feature list in the SAM 945 is eye-popping. In addition to a variety of triggering options and data collection or storage routines, the handheld gives users handy extras like photo-tagging or mid-acquisition time adjustments. GPS details and other environmental conditions are acquired automatically without the need for special user involvement. The utility of using a smartphone / PDA is remarkable, with vibrant display options, ringtones and alarm sounds, efficient power conservation, and an IP65 rated detector package. PeakAbout, the app for the Model 945 SAM III, is included at no charge and is updated with new features regularly by Berkeley Nucleonics. For the next generation of isotope identifier users, the SAM III should be considered.

Electronics use digital signal processing rated at 250,000 to 400,000 CPS (Cs 137). The smartphone display can show the spectrum for review and identification, with color-coded isotope classes and per-nuclide dose rates.

Each identification is reported with its isotope, category, and confidence. Categories are color coded so an operator reads SNM, NORM, medical, industrial, and unknown classes at a glance.
